Since 1990, people have come to the Jewish Community Foundation of Calgary for many reasons, but chief among them is their confidence in our ability to carry out their charitable goals. We are dedicated to building productive, long-term relationships that benefit the community while giving you the flexibility, professional service and personalized attention you deserve.
The funds managed by the JCFC are pooled and direct management of the funds is outsourced to professional managers under the oversight of an Investment Committee. Pooled funds are invested in fixed income and equities in such proportions as may be established from time to time by the Investment Committee and as approved by the Board of the Jewish Community Foundation. Liquidity, flexibility and preservation of capital, while earning a responsible return, are primary considerations in the management of the assets. A review of the asset mix occurs at regular intervals to ensure that it remains appropriate to the Foundation requirements and current legislation. The target earnings level is 5% annually. Diversification in choosing asset classes and within asset classes is stressed. Participation in the pooled portfolio is open to any philanthropic organization.
The primary objectives in investing assets of the pooled funds of the JCFC shall be:
- To preserve and augment the capital resources of the Foundation through adequate diversification in high quality investments.
- To balance the opportunities afforded by the Foundation’s very long term investment horizon with its liquidity requirements.
- To achieve an annual rate of return that is will retain the purchasing power of the monies entrusted to us, enable our fund-holders to make grants, and cover the costs of administrating the Foundation.
While growing the endowment continues to be the overall objective of the Foundation, the Foundation does not seek to grow through fundraising campaigns or through aggressive investment management. Rather, it seeks to inspire giving by forging relationships between donors and the causes they care about.
