The 8th Annual Dov & Arlein Chetner Chai Essay Contest – A Success!

Thank you to all of the participants of the 8th Annual Dov & Arlein Chetner Chai Essay Contest. It was another amazing year of thoughtful and
personal perspectives . This year’s topic was:

“Oh my G-d: Where are you?…What are you?…Are you?…What is the concept of G-d from the Jewish perspective? How does this affect or
contribute to your practice of Judaism?”

For eight years, Dov and Arlein have thoroughly enjoyed challenging post-secondary students with provocative questions on current issues
surrounding Israel, Judaism and personal beliefs. They very much appreciate the wonderful array of essays that are written each year, and
discussing the viewpoints as a family. Through the Arlein & Dov Chetner Family Endowment Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of
Calgary, the Chetner’s generously offer over $5000 in cash prizes every year. Entrants from across Canada are welcomed to submit an essay
if they are a Canadian, post-secondary student.

Winners of the 2012 contest are:

  • First Prize ($2700) awarded to Zvi Andrews-Pardes
  • Second Prize ($1800) awarded to Joseph Mandelbaum
  • Third Prize ($900) awarded to Courtney Firestone

The Jewish Community Foundation is happy to promote and support the essay contest because it offers another avenue for students to gain
financial support for higher learning. Chair of the JCFC Board of Directors, Dr. Bettina Liverant Zeisler says, “The Chetner family has found a
creative way to inspire students within the Jewish community and to continue their philanthropic focus on education and life-long learning.”

Mazel Tov to the winners and we look forward to next year’s contest!
